Goodness , it rained it poured, it flooded ........but run we did!
Nothing keeps a Lindsey Fitness Running Club member down it seems. Last Sunday dawned , dark, gloomy and very, very, very wet! But Sunday was when all the the training, sweat and blisters came to fruition for the 40th Virgin London Marathon and for the first time in history run Virtually. The original and traditional April date for the event had to be moved because of the Covid Pandemic and reorganised so participants run their
own 26.2 mile route having registered to be tracked by an Official App.
Plans were thrown into disarray for the Lindsey Fitness Runners at the last minute when on Saturday it was realised that part of our planned route was flooded, muddy and therefore too dangerous to run. So a cry for help to, and discussion with Marathon Participant Mark Nott and lead car support Karen Potter resulted in planning a new two lap loop around WGC and Hatfield, in place within 2 hours - just fantastic!
So supported by 3 cars each with 2 supporters on board, 6 Marathon runners with support runners split over two groups set off in torrential rain on an epic and historic run.
It was an incredible run for us all, not least because of the support of several wonderful members working as part of their own team to cover the 26.2 mile distance as a group and to be a part of the day.
Others despite the dreadful weather conditions placed themselves on the route to cheer us on, which lifted and propelled us on our way. The planned car support intervals saw a plethora of smiles, cheers, words of encouragement, electrolyte fluids, water, jelly babies, painkillers and vaseline!!!!! It all went like clockwork and the miles sped by.
For the distance runners words of positivity and camaraderie when the going got tough to take each other forwards and onwards, counting the route down to the finish .
The elation felt as our 'Running Home' Money Hole Lane came into view and the joy of seeing such a gathering of ( socially distanced and masked) friends , members and relations cheering in the rain , clapping and drawing us to the finish line after the hours of running. The wave of emotion that hits the runners and supporters alike as the finish line is crossed - the job is done, we made it!
Behind as all and our inspiration and desire to achieve this marathon last Sunday was Running Leader Jan, who was very much with us in spirit . Unable to join us on the day as he continues his amazing recovery, Jan sent a heart-warming video message the day before. It was just what we needed and
certainly was a huge motivator to cross that finish line . Also we were running for Charities. and would like to thank everyone who supported fund raising events or has donated in any way . Mark Nott as a tribute to Jan has raised over 3k for the British Heart Foundation, Natalie Kempster over 4k for the Royal Free Charity in memory of her Father and myself running for the Willow foundation has now exceeded 3k - Over 10k between us - just phenomenal,!!!! Rain....what rain bring on the next
Marathon!
