Hello,

Well its certainly warmer, and the bouts of sunshine are certainly encouraging the daffodils to bloom, which is most uplifting to see out on my walks with Frank the Vizsla. 

A question... are you wearing sunscreen every day especially when you are out and about? This weeks health matters is about you and your skin, looking after it and noticing any changes that might need following up.Your skin is the largest organ of the human body, and it plays a vital role in protecting you. How well do you look after yours?

I am excited this week for the next weigh in and discussion meeting with new Lindsey Fitness Health & Wellbeing group following the first month on from their You & Me programme in January. Those in the group have continued upbeat, positive and proactive with all things nutrition and fitness as they move forward being their 'best and healthiest versions'. I am so looking forward to checking in with them.

The first Reset of the year starts on Monday as those already signed up spring into a very succinct deep clean for March. a perfect time of year to align the mind and body . There are still 2 places available if you would like to join us , you won't regret it

Health Matters>>>> 

I am writing this week about something we all have in common—our skin. It's not just a covering; it's a living, breathing part of us that deserves care and attention every day. 

First off, our skin is amazing. It's our body's largest organ, and it is working hard  24/7. It protects us from germs, regulates our body temperature, and even allows us to feel the world around us. 

 Think about how much your skin goes through daily. Sun exposure, pollution, and even stress can take a toll on it. By taking care of our skin, we're not just keeping it looking good; we're also helping it do its job better. Cleansing, moisturising, and using sunscreen, along with drinking plenty of water are simple steps that go a long way to keeping it in good condition.

Something important we should chat about is regularly checking checking for moles and any changes in them. Moles are usually harmless, but sometimes changes in them  can be a sign of something more serious, like skin cancer. 

Make it a habit to check your skin regularly. Look for changes in size, shape, or colour of your moles. Get someone to check your back too. If something doesn’t seem right, follow it up by reaching out to a health professional.

This is something I was prompted to do before Christmas and on advice saw my GP who in the first instance put my mind at rest and told me there was nothing to be concerned about.. I was however encouraged to get a second opinion , which I did. I then got an urgent dermatology referral  and two sites  on my face were diagnosed as early stage Basal Cell Carcinomas.

BCC is the most common form of skin cancer, and the good news is it's usually treatable, especially when caught early. But... "What exactly is Basal Cell Carcinoma?" Well, BCC starts in the basal cells, which are found in the outer layer of your skin, the Epidermis. These cells are responsible for producing new skin cells as old ones die off. When these cells grow out of control, they can form a cancerous lesion.

 "How do I know if I have BCC?" Look out for new growths or sores that don't heal. They might appear as a pearly bump, a flat, flesh-coloured or brown scar-like lesion, or even a bleeding or scabbing sore. If you spot anything unusual, it's a good idea to get it checked out. Early detection and treatment are your best friends in dealing with BCC.

Treatment options for BCC can be very effective. I am currently treating it topically over a 4 week period. Or it may  involve removing the cancerous tissue, which can be done in a few different ways depending on the size and location of the cancer. 

Let's talk prevention then. Protecting your skin from the sun's harmful rays is key. So, even during these winter months it's important to wear sunscreem. My daily face moisturiser contains factor 50. 

Then as the season changes slather on that sunscreen, wear protective clothing, and try to stay in the shade during peak sun hours. These simple steps can all make a big difference.

Stay positive, stay informed, and remember that taking care of your skin is an important part of taking care of you.

FOOD MATTERS>>>>

Baked Fish and Roasted Vegetable Traybake

INGREDIENTS:

• 2 fresh fish fillets (salmon or cod work beautifully)
• 1 lemon, sliced
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• Salt and pepper to taste
• 1 teaspoon garlic powder
• 1 teaspoon dried thyme
• 1 red  pepper, sliced
• 1 courgette, sliced
• A handful of cherry tomatoes, halved
• Fresh parsley for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Preheat Your Oven : Set it to 400°F (200°C). This way, it's nice and hot when we’re ready to roast.
2. Prepare the Fish: Place the fish fillets on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Drizzle them with olive oil, and then sprinkle with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and thyme. Lay a couple of lemon slices on top of each fillet. This will infuse the fish with a fresh, zesty flavor.
3. Get Those Veggies Ready: In a mixing bowl, toss your  pepper, courgette, and cherry tomatoes with a little olive oil, salt, and pepper. Spread them around the fish on the baking sheet. They’ll soak up all those lovely juices as they roast.
4. Roast Away: Pop the baking sheet into the oven and let everything roast for about 15-20 minutes. You’ll know it’s done when the fish flakes easily with a fork and the veggies are tender and slightly caramelized.
5. Serve: Carefully plate your fish and veggies, and sprinkle some fresh parsley on top for a pop of colour and freshness.

And there you have it—a warm, hearty meal that's sure to bring a smile to your face. Enjoy this dish with your loved ones, and feel free to experiment with different herbs and veggies. Cooking is all about creativity and joy, so have fun with it!  - ENJOY!
