Damage Limitation: Mindful Eating and Drinking Over Christmas
The festive season is a time of joy, celebration, and...... indulgence. With parties and meals out, we are often faced with rich foods and alcohol in abundance, and it can be easy to let go of any thought of healthy habits. However, mindful eating and drinking can help you enjoy the delights of the season without the unwanted side effect of weight gain.
Here’s how you can maintain a balance while still partaking in the festivities. Understanding Mindful Eating Mindful eating is about being present and fully engaged with your eating experience. This is something followers of the Placebo Diet and those partaking in regular Resets with me are totally at home with now as a norm. It involves
paying attention to the flavours, textures, and aromas of food, as well as recognising your body’s hunger and fullness cues. This practice encourages a healthier relationship with food and can prevent overeating. Tips for Mindful Eating Over Christmas - Plan Ahead : Before attending festive gatherings, think ahead. View the menu for restaurants ahead, and set your intention to make the right choice
in advance. Buffets are a minefield, so eat your meal before you go and avoid the the food table altogether. NO FLYTIPPING!
- Focus on Portions: Instead of depriving yourself of festive treats, focus on portion control. Use smaller plates and take modest servings of your favourite dishes. This allows you to enjoy a variety of foods without overindulging. Make it a must be a mindful choice rather than a spontaneous grab and
go.
- Eat Slowly: Take the time to chew slowly and savour the flavours of your food. This not only enhances your eating experience but also gives your brain time to register fullness, reducing the likelihood of overeating.
- Listen to Your Body: Pay attention to your body’s hunger and fullness signals. Eat when you’re hungry and stop when you’re comfortably full, rather than
when your plate is empty.
- Limit Distractions: Try to eat without distractions such as television or smartphones. This helps you stay focused on the food and your body’s responses, promoting a more mindful eating experience.
Mindful Drinking Strategies
Alcohol is often a staple at Christmas parties, but it can also contribute to weight gain because of the sugar content. Here’s how to enjoy festive drinks mindfully: - Choose Wisely: Offer to drive and avoid alcohol altogether, or choose options like wine, light beer, or spirits mixed with soda water. Avoid sugary
cocktails that will pile on the pounds on inches.
- Pace Yourself: Sip your drink slowly and enjoy the flavours. Alternate alcoholic beverages with water to stay hydrated and reduce overall alcohol consumption.
- Set Limits: Decide in advance 'prime' how many drinks you’ll have and stick to your plan. This helps prevent excessive drinking and the associated increased
calorie intake in the form of sugar.
- Be Aware of Emotional Triggers: Sometimes, we drink to celebrate or cope with Christmas stress. Recognise these triggers and find alternative ways to manage emotions, such as taking a walk, a Lindsey Fitness Home online exercise session, tapping or practicing deep breathing exercises or a meditation - Time ou or time off can be super
beneficial.
Embrace a Balanced Approach The key to enjoying the festive season without weight gain is balance. Allow yourself to indulge in your favourite holiday treats, but do so mindfully and in moderation. Remember that the festive season is about more than just food and drink; it’s also about spending time with loved ones and creating cherished memories. Conclusion Mindful eating and drinking during the Christmas season allows you to enjoy the festivities without compromising your health goals. By being present and intentional with your choices, you can savour the holiday experience while maintaining a healthy balance. This Christmas, embrace mindfulness as your guide to a joyful and health-conscious
celebration.

FOOD MATTERS >>> Here's a delightful recipe for festive mulled wine, perfect for warming up during the festive season: FESTIVE MULLED WINE (See Tips for non-alcoholic version)
INGREDIENTS: - 1 bottle of red wine (750ml) – a medium-bodied wine like Merlot, Zinfandel, or Grenache works well
- 1 orange, sliced into rounds (plus extra for garnish)
- 8 whole cloves
- 2-3 cinnamon sticks
- 2-3 star anise
- 1-2 tablespoons of honey or sugar (to taste)
- 1/4 cup brandy (optional, for extra warmth and depth)
- 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon of freshly grated nutmeg
- 1-2 cardamom pods (optional)
- Fresh cranberries or pomegranate seeds for garnish (optional)
- Fresh rosemary or thyme sprigs for garnish (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS: Prepare the Orange: - Stud the orange slices with cloves
by inserting the pointed ends of the cloves into the orange rind. This will help infuse the wine with a rich, aromatic flavour

gently to mix the ingredient
- Heat the Mixture:

- Simmer and
Infuse:
- Reduce the heat to low and let the wine simmer gently for about 20-30 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld together beautifully. Stir occasionally to ensure the honey or sugar dissolves completely
- Taste and Adjust:**
- Taste the mulled wine and
adjust the sweetness if necessary. using honey.
- Strain and Serve:
- Once the wine is infused to your liking, remove it from the heat. Strain the mulled wine through a fine mesh sieve to remove the spices and orange slices.
- Garnish and
Enjoy:
- Serve the mulled wine warm in mugs or heatproof glasses. Garnish with fresh orange slices, cranberries, pomegranate seeds, and a sprig of rosemary or thyme for an extra festive touch.- ENJOY!
Tips: - For a non-alcoholic version, substitute the wine with grape juice or cranberry juice.
- Feel free to experiment with additional spices like allspice or ginger for a unique twist.
- Mulled wine can be kept warm in a slow cooker set to low, making it perfect for serving at festive gatherings.
