As my Lindsey Fitness members are aware Gary and I were joined in our home by Frank the adorable Hungarian Vizsla three months ago. Frank brings with him a lot of love, fun, happiness and commitment of course along with .......a lot more exercise !!!!
He's 5 months old now and our daily walks are a joy, my step count is up significantly as we implement his training and socialisation - (Frank's not Gary's !). We eventually intend to have him running with us in a year or so once he is fully grown.
On our walks it's also great to see so many other people, (and dogs) out in the fresh air just walking - and walking is one of the best and easiest forms of exercise. It costs nothing but a little time, has amazing physical and mental health benefits and can be very sociable too!
Building up to a brisk 10 minute walk just once each day certainly counts towards your minimum exercise recommendation and the associated health benefits are many.
Benefits of regular walking for exercise include:
- Strengthens muscles and bones
- Improves heart health
- Builds stamina
- Burns excess calories
- Promotes weight loss
- Reduces risk of major illnesses such as coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and cancer
- Lowers risk of early death by 30%
- Boosts self esteem, mood, sleep quality and energy
- Reduces risk of stress, clinical depression, dementia and Alzheimers disease.
So there you have it , just walking can have huge implications for better physical and mental health ......do you walk? Could you walk further, more often, encourage others to join you? Have a think about joining the Lindsey Fitness Running Club power walking group every Sunday (See later in Newsletter) or get yourself started just one step at a time .
